Medellín is a great base for exploring the wider Antioquia region. Within a few hours you can be at a stunning reservoir, a colonial village, a working coffee finca, or one of Colombia’s most dramatic natural landmarks. Here are the best day trips and weekend escapes.
Guatapé & El Peñol (2 hours)
The single most popular day trip from Medellín. El Peñol is a massive granite rock you can climb for panoramic views of the reservoir below. Guatapé town is famous for its colorful zócalos (decorative panels on building facades). Go on a weekday to avoid crowds.
Santa Fe de Antioquia (2.5 hours)
A beautifully preserved colonial town with white-washed buildings, a historic church, and a relaxed pace. Perfect for a weekend escape. Famous for the Puente de Occidente — a 19th-century suspension bridge over the Cauca River.
Coffee Region (3–4 hours)
The Coffee Triangle (Salento, Armenia, Manizales) is a few hours south. Coffee farm tours, wax palm trees, trout fishing, and some of the most scenic countryside in Colombia. Best as a 2–3 day trip.
Jardín (4 hours)
A small colonial town known for its flower-filled main square, excellent coffee, and hiking to a Christ statue with panoramic views. Getting more popular but still feels authentic.
Jericó (3 hours)
The birthplace of Santa Laura Montoya — a quieter alternative to Jardín with stunning views, good coffee, and far fewer tourists.
How to Get There
Most day trips go by private transfer or booked tour. Public buses exist but are slower and less convenient for day trips. For Guatapé, shared tour minibuses leave from Medellín’s Terminal del Norte every morning.
